With the Freda remaining a problem, questions are being asked about the situation on the Eastside anchoring ground and the incredible situation whereby such vessels are allowed to anchor there without any real or effective control from the Gibraltar port authority. Why is it that the Gibraltar Government does not at least license ships anchoring there?
Meanwhile, flowing from the most recent incident ,the Environmental Safety Group say that many questions remain over the engineering troubles of Fedra and whether there are any other vessels moored long-term off the eastside in a similar state?
The main areas the ESG has been campaigning on for some years now, include:
. Fumes from bunkering and available technology- better information for community
. Eastside Vessels (unregulated and uncontrolled)
. Heightened risk of accidents at sea, cross port coordination
. Implementation of previous accident report recommendations produced by the Maritime Administration
The overriding issue for the ESG is that 'while we do not have adequate shipping controls in the Bay, be it in Gibraltar, or at cross border level, FEDRA is yet another example of the reality of the risks we face from the current situation.'
