Sea Shepherd's anti-whaling boat 'Ady Gil' sinks after collission

6 January 2010

The anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd's boat, the Ady Gil, has sunk in the Southern Ocean after being hit by a Japanese vessel.

The anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd says one of its boats has sunk in the Southern Ocean after being hit by a Japanese vessel.

The group says the Ady Gil was at a standstill in Australian waters off Commonwealth Bay when the Japanese whaling ship Shonan Maru 2 deliberately rammed into it.

Sea Shepherd spokesman Chris Aultman, a helicopter pilot for the group, says no crew members were injured in the incident, but the ship has been destroyed.

"The vessel was dead in the water. It was completely and absolutely a wilful act," he said.

"Luckily no one was in the bow of the vessel at the time of the collision or they certainly would have been killed instantly."

Lacky Maclean, the first mate of the Sea Shepherd's ship, the Steve Irwin, says the bow of the Ady Gil was cut off in the attack.

"There's a big difference between throwing stink bombs and sinking a vessel," he said.

A spokesman for Japan's Fisheries Agency, which oversees the country's whaling program, says it is investigating the incident.

The Federal Government has repeated its call for restraint by all parties in the Southern Ocean.

Earlier in the day the Ady Gil clashed with a different Japanese whaling boat.

Sea Shepherd unveiled the Ady Gil in October last year, describing it as "a fast, futuristic-looking trimaran that recently set the world record for global circumnavigation".

The ship, which can reach up to 50 knots, was used to intercept and block harpoon ships from killing whales.

Captain Paul Watson, the president and founder of Sea Shepherd, had said the ship enabled the group's current campaign to be the "most ambitious and aggressive effort to date".

One can cleary see the Japanese ship is stearing away from the Ady Gil, by the Japanese ship's wake. The Captain of the Ady Gil is at fault. America is spinning the incident.

The Shonan Maru 2 is 52 meter long support/security ship it can only make 12 knots top speed. It isn't one of the current vessels in research fleet seen on "Whale Wars" . On the other hand the Ady Gil is a race boat that is only 24 metes and it can do 40 knots! There is no question which boat is more maneuverable and you can plainly see that the Ady Gil isn't sitting still in the video. Both outriggers show a trail indicating forward motion and at the last moment the Ady Gil accelerates into the SM2. They slowly walked into a train I don't feel the least bit sorry for them.

Contrary to Watson's media BS the Ady Gil wasn't backing away in either video if it was it could have outrun the SM2 in reverse no problem. It just goes to show you The bigger boat has right of way especially if you're made of carbon composite and the bigger boat has a steel hull.

BTW it is confirmed the Ady Gil took on water and sank while being towed. One down two to go.

How can a fast, light vessle be hit by a big, slow one? By being in front of it deliberately, perhaps.
And how come activists get furious over a few hundred whales being killed, while say 70000 moose are hunted each year in Sweden alone? Maybe anti-whaling is sexier than anti-hunting on land? Do you think the animals on land suffer less when they are wounded but not killed? And bullfighting... Best not to mention. Fundraising for pirates is easier than most fundraising too, isn't it? My opinion

Did anyone happen to notice the sm2 blast the Gil with the water cannon at the end. The Gil was disabled and they still got attacked. The last 15 secs of the video show the ruthlessness of the sm2 intentions
