The newly fitted out interisland ferry Aratere suffered an engine failure today and had to be towed back to the Wellington terminal by tugboats.
The ship was returning from a freight run to Picton when it ran into trouble and two tugs towed it to port about 11.30am.
The problem is expected to be fixed quickly and the ferry should be sailing by later this afternoon, Interislander general manager Thomas Davis says.
